Can you host and
manage my servers? |
 |
| |
Yes, we are able to host
and maintain your servers for you, this
is a good option if you wish to have complete
ownership of the equipment and will give
you the advantage of being able to relocate
at a point in the future should you wish
to. Reduced pricing is available to anyone
wishing to outsource their hardware. Please
note that this is only available for rack
mount servers and blade servers. |

What are the requirements? |
 |
| |
To be eligible for this
service, you must have a PC or thin client
terminal and an internet connection. We
recommend that the connection is a version
of broadband. We will facilitate supply
of this service on request.
A signed contract for a minimum of five
users for a minimum 3 year term.
You must be keen to receive the highest
level of service and to have the peace of
mind that your IT expenditure will be budgetable
and not spiral out of control.

Can
I use my digital camera on this service? |
 |
| |
Yes, but where you would
ordinarily connect your digital camera to
your local PC and save the images to your
PC, if you imagine the keyboard, mouse and
monitor on long cables from our servers
– very quickly you realise that there is
nowhere to plug the camera into as the PC
you are using is in our HQ. So the solution
is very simple but will require a slight
change in the way you may have worked previously.
We, for a nominal charge, can supply clients
with a memory card reader. These are a small
unit (about the size of a packet of cigarettes)
which has a number of slots in them to allow
users to insert memory cards. In order to
transfer the images to our server, you have
to remove the memory card from your digital
camera, insert it in the correct slot for
the type of card and after a few seconds
the files will appear under the ‘My Computer’
icon in much the same way as your camera
used to appear here when connected to your
PC. You can then select image/s and copy
them to wherever you decide to store them
on your pseudo PC. The one important thing
to remember is that when you transfer the
images, you are actually transferring them
to our server/s. Therefore if the photographs
are of the highest resolution there will
be a delay while this happens. In most cases
the photographs don’t need to be such a
high resolution and we recommend your camera
is set to a maximum resolution of 640 x
480. |

Does it matter
that my PC is old and doesn’t meet the requirements
for my software? |
 |
| |
No, the processing is all
done by your pseudo PC on one of our servers.
So the minimum specification for any software
to run needs to be checked against our servers
for compliance. What this invariably means
is that our clients would-be redundant PCs
will work as fluidly as the latest high
specification PCs do. Older PCs can be marginally
slower because their video cards and processing
power is limited when compared to newer
machines. As an example a new PC is likely
to have 128Mb video card, or better, so
an older PC with a 16Mb video card may take
a fraction of a second for the image to
be refreshed whereas a new PC is faster.
What this means is that an older machine
maybe very slightly slower than its latest
counterpart… but this speed difference is
negligible and doesn’t impact on the overall
experience. |

|
 |
Do I have to back
up my data? |
 |
| |
No, this is not necessary.
Our servers are routinely backed up and
your data is also stored offsite to ensure
the ability to recover your precious data
in the event of a calamity at our HQ. |
|
| |
|
|
 |
How do I install
my software? |
 |
| |
At
soon as you agree to use our service, someone
from our sales team will contact you to
discuss your requirements. As standard we
provide the entire Microsoft Office Standard
Suite. You will be asked if you have any
additional requirements which are not included
in Office standard, e.g. Microsoft Access
or Microsoft Publisher. These can be added
at any point in the future for a small monthly
charge, so don’t worry if your requirements
change in the future and you find that these
would be an asset.
You will also
be asked to disclose any non-Microsoft applications
which you require on a day to day basis.
Examples include Sage products, Quick Books,
CFP software, Prop Co, Soulman, etc. The
likelihood is that we have already been
asked about any packages you need and will
be able to confirm their compatibility with
our systems. If it is a new product which
we are not familiar with, then we are happy
to liaise with the software company to ascertain
compatibility and indeed work with the software
company to develop their software.

Can I print to
mine and other printers? |
 |
| |
Yes,
although it is not always entirely straight
forward setting this up…
Again, by imagining the long cables
from the keyboard, mouse and screen to our
servers, you can quickly see that there
may be a problem getting a long enough cable
to go from your printer/s to our servers.
So as the solution is network based, we
are only able to guarantee to print to network
capable printers. It is worth noting that
some other units are compatible with the
solution and our technical staff are more
than happy to check the compatibility of
your existing printer/s and let you know.
The main criterion is that the printer needs
to have drivers which are fully Windows
compatible (WHQL signed). If your printer
is not a network ready printer, you may
need to add a small print server. These
are generally inexpensive and will allow
the full functionality of the solution.
Remember, if you have a printer at home
which you would like to print to then this
may also need a print server. From within
the windows environment you will print to
your default printer in the usual way. If
you are away from your default location,
e.g. at home, you will need to select this
printer from a drop down list when you print
– otherwise when you print, it will come
out on your default printer! |

|
 |
If my session is
interrupted (e.g. computer failure/power
cut) will I be able to reconnect to my work? |
 |
| |
If your session is disrupted
you should always be able to reconnect (from
another terminal if necessary) and carry
on where you left off. Some events may cause
extended downtime such as power failure
or other environmental factors, but as soon
as these are resolved you may log back in
to your session. |
